Once in a while, I really really fall for a piece that I'm doing, and that happened all of a sudden today. If you're in the mood to listen to some gorgeous Mahler, here's a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOUh5hPHolQ&feature=related

Translation:

Who is then outside, and who is knocking,
Who can so softly, softly waken me?
It is your darling,
Arise and let me come in to you!

Why should I stand here any longer?
I see the dawn arrive,
The dawn, two bright stars,
With my darling would I gladly be,
With my heart's most beloved!

The maiden arose and let him in;
She welcomed him as well:
Welcome, my beloved boy,
You have stood outside so long!

She reached to him her snow-white hand.
From afar a nightingale sang;
The maiden began to weep.

Oh, do not cry, my darling,
Next year you shall be my own!
My own shall you certainly be,
As no one else on earth is.
O Love on the green earth!

I go to war on the green heath,
The green heath that is so broad!
It is there where the beautiful trumpets blow,
There is my house of green grass

Hello lj friends, it's been a while. And I keep on saying I'll really update. Oh well! This semester is looking really good so far. I am taking:

Ethnomusicology 225 with Kera Washington.  So much fun!

Tonal Counterpoint and Harmony 244, which seems alright so far.  It's something I haven't really explored before, so I'm excited about that.

Spanish 202, with the same professor as last semester.  Me encanta!

Writing 125: The Viet Nam War. So far this looks like it should be an intense, passionate class, and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.

And the Widows are hot this semester, as always.  We're having a free concert at the Woburn Public Library next Saturday, the 18th, at 7:30 p.m. and you should go to that.

Tonight I don't know what to do.  Dyke ball?  Movies?  I'm a little grumpy...we'll see.

Oh!  I should post pictures from the past...many...months. )
I think that's all for now.

HALBERSTADT, Germany (AFP) - A new chord was scheduled to sound in the world's slowest and longest lasting concert that is taking a total 639 years to perform.
The abandoned Buchardi church in Halberstadt, eastern Germany, is the venue for a mind-boggling 639-year-long performance of a piece of music by US experimental composer John Cage (1912-1992).
Entitled "organ2/ASLSP" (or "As SLow aS Possible"), the performance began on September 5, 2001 and is scheduled to last until 2639.
The first year and half of the performance was total silence, with the first chord -- G-sharp, B and G-sharp -- not sounding until February 2, 2003.
Then in July 2004, two additional Es, an octave apart, were sounded and are scheduled to be released later this year on May 5.
But at 5:00 pm (1600 GMT) on Thursday, the first chord was due to progress to a second -- comprising A, C and F-sharp -- and is to be held down over the next few years by weights on an organ being built especially for the project.
Cage originally conceived "ASLSP" in 1985 as a 20-minute work for piano, subsequently transcribing it for organ in 1987.
But organisers of the John Cage Organ Project decided to take the composer at his word and stretch out the performance for 639 years, using Cage's transcription for organ.
The enormous running time was chosen to commemorate the creation of Halberstadt's historic Blockwerk organ in 1361 -- 639 years before the current project started.

Today kinda sucked. I'm just in a little bit of a bad mood because of stress over registering classes and this whole Pittsburgh thing. Last night Cazenove had our traditional candle-lighting ceremony. We stood in a circle and passed a flame and spoke about our hopes for the year. Then, to extinguish the flames, we jumped in the lake fully clothed. It was fun. :) Today we registered for classes. I am taking Poli Sci, A religion class about East Asian religions, Music 122, Spanish 201, and voice lessons. Actually, I am excited about the voice lessons. I auditioned yesterday and today I got a letter from Marion Dry, who is the head of the music department and a kinda famous opera singer within the opera community, and she is my new teacher! So I'm excited about that.

I'm leaning towards going to Pittsburgh. It's impractical, but hey it would be a fantastic experience.

This may shock some of you...but I have decided to quit the play. I have already put a lot of thought into this decision, and I can understand that a lot of people are going to be angry, but I ...I just can't go on with it any more.

There is the issue of filling the role, but I'm sure there are lots of people who could play Kim. Erin could take it, or Katie, or Belinda, or maybe they could write it out...but that seems unreasonable.

Nickie, I know you're going to kill me, as is Bethany, Tim, Liz, the rest of the drama club, H, Mrs. Scholnick...I'm definitely not looking forward to that. But I'll understand if none of you talk to me again for a long time.

It's more of my own fault than anyone's really. Ever since the beginning, I have been getting bad vibes. The karma is somehow off..it has always been bad energy, but recently more and more I have felt so out of place, so awkward, as though I don't belong there, and I dread every rehearsal more than you can imagine. Maybe it has to do with all of the changes in our lives which have gone on recently, but it's very upsetting, and I can't take it any more. Again, I'm so sorry...

It's partially my mom, too. When I got into college, my grades started to fall. And now she wants me to give up my biggest time-consuming extra-curricular, that being drama, until I get back into line. Again, it's my own fault.

I'll still come to see you guys if you don't ban me from doing so.

For all of you who are already about to strangle me...this takes the cake )

Step 1: Put your media player on random.
Step 2: Pick your favorite lines from the first 25 songs that play.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song the lines come from.
Step 4: Strike out the songs that people have guessed.
Step 5: NO GOOGLING!!!

1. Rest high above the clouds no restrictions, television you bounce from the world. And while I spend these hours, five senses reeling, I laugh about this world in my ________ eyes

2. I remember we were driving driving in your car, the speed so fast I felt like I was drunk. City lights lay out before us, and you're arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder. And I had a feeling that I belonged, and I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone. A point for Ofer!

3. Tell me something about yourself that someone could have just told you if they were honest. This one goes to Kim.

4. If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine and my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, would you hear my voice come through the music, would you hold it near as it were your own?

5. It's time to tell the world, we both know it was a girl back in Bethlehem. And on that fateful day when she was crucified, she wore Shiseido Red and we drank tea by her side. Rah Rah Bethany

6. All good dreamers pass this way some day hidin’ behind bottles in dark cafes. Dark cafes. Only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings and fly away. Only a phase, these dark cafe days.

7. Thick and funky, steamin' up the dancefloor. Get on up and shake that thing, everybody gettin' what they ask for. Everybody, everybody sing...sing sing sing, welcome to Joey's toilet, blah blah blah boing boing boing whee! Niiiickie!

8. You don't have to put on the red light. Score for Hallie and Heather!

9. Mark, it's the wicked witch of the west, your mother. Happy New Years from Scarsdale! One for Justin and Kristen

10. My father was a tattoo artist in Haiphong, but his designs on mother didn't last too long. My mother sold her body, high on Betel nuts, my job was bringing red-faced monsieurs to our huts. Selling your mom is a wrench. Perfume can cover a stench, that's what I learned from the French. One more for my lovely sister!

The other 15... )

Oh and in other news...I just turned my very very neglected other journal, [info]greenlimosine, into a journal in which to post my artwork. Probably, it will be mostly or all sketches and drawings...things of that sort. Who knows, maybe someday I'll throw in some watercolors or something. Anyways, if you're interested, check it out and I'll be more than happy to add ya!

Here is the picture of that knot I mentioned before...compared to a pic of Jack Skellington. creepy. )

Somewhat uncanny, no? I was just sitting in the cabin last weekend staring at the ceiling when the knot struck me as being strange...then Tim pointed out the similarity to Jack, and Bethany agreed.
